DBT Tips For Neurodivergent Folks

As a therapist committed to fostering mental well-being, I find joy in supporting neurodivergent individuals on their unique journeys. Navigating the intricacies of the mind can be both challenging and rewarding, and that's why I'm here to share some valuable tips on self-care, mindfulness, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) strategies tailored specifically for neurodivergent folks. I’ve got some fun infographics on instagram that may be helpful to add to your list of tools!

Embrace Self-Care As A Ritual

In the hustle of daily life, self-care often takes a backseat. For neurodivergent individuals, establishing a routine of self-care rituals can be a game-changer. Find activities that resonate with you, whether it's reading, painting, or going for a nature walk. These moments of self-nurturing are not indulgences but essential for maintaining emotional equilibrium. Schedule ahead of time because we know that you will end up making it the last on the list and get distracted by the daily chaos that is life! It can be 15 minutes, 30 minutes, whatever seems manageable and realistic for your life. I like to take the long way home and run through Starbucks before I switch from therapist to mom mode. It’s small but the small things add up.

The Power Of Mindfulness In Daily Life

Mindfulness is a powerful tool that’s been around for centuries (think Buddhism). For neurodivergent individuals, it can provide a stable anchor in the face of life's uncertainties but can seem boring, daunting or just impossible to navigate. Start with simple practices like mindful breathing while you wash your hands, body scans when you get to the car to drive, drinking a hot drink before you start the day for 5 minutes. Embrace each moment with an open heart, free from judgment. Mindfulness isn't about emptying your mind; it's about observing thoughts without attachment. I like to picture my intrusive and anxious thoughts winding through a river or stream and that visual is grounding because it reminds me that the rivers keep flowing and the thoughts will move on if I give them space to exist without batting them away or shaming them.

DBT Strategies For Emotional Regulation

Dialectical Behavior Therapy, developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan, is a goldmine of strategies for emotional regulation. For neurodivergent individuals, the "Emotion Regulation" module can be particularly transformative. Identify and label your emotions, then explore the factors contributing to them. Remember, emotions are valid, and understanding them is the first step toward effective regulation. There is a wonderful workbook specifically for Neurodivergent folks that is available at the office or you can search for it on Amazon: The Neurodivergent Friendly Workbook of DBT Skills by Sonny Jane Wise.

Neurodivergent individuals often face the challenge of being misunderstood or invalidated by society. In your self-care journey, it's crucial to validate your own experiences. Your feelings are valid, and you have the right to advocate for your needs. Practice self-compassion and surround yourself with a support system that acknowledges and embraces your uniqueness.

Build A Supportive Community

Humans are social beings, and creating connections is vital for mental health. Seek out communities that understand and celebrate neurodivergent experiences. Share your triumphs and challenges, and learn from others who have walked similar paths. In the digital age, online forums and social media groups can provide a sense of belonging and understanding. There are Facebook groups, subreddits, fun and relatable instagram accounts (memes are the best) that you can explore and connect to, even if you just lurk like I do and don’t really post.

Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection

In the pursuit of self-care and personal growth, perfection is not the goal. Celebrate the small victories, no matter how seemingly insignificant. You spent 5 minutes mindfully eating the most delicious cupcake while letting your brain process thoughts in a non-judgmental way. Love that! Progress is a journey, and every step forward is worth acknowledging. Be kind to yourself on this path of self-discovery, and remember that it's okay not to have all the answers.

Conclusion

As a therapist dedicated to the well-being of neurodivergent individuals, my hope is that these tips serve as stepping stones on your path to self-discovery and resilience. Embrace the uniqueness of your journey, and remember that you are not alone. Through self-care, mindfulness, and DBT strategies, you have the power to navigate the waves of life with strength, compassion, and authenticity.

Wishing you a journey filled with self-discovery and growth. Should you need more guidance, many of our team are trained in DBT and would be happy to provide you some guidance on how to work on these skills!
